Technical Abstract: HJ98 hard red spring wheat variety was developed jointly by USDA-ARS, University of Minnesota, and Pioneer Hi-Bred International. The Pioneer spring wheat program was closed in 1989 and their germplasm was jointly distributed to wheat breeding programs in North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota. The line, later released as HJ98, was identified after yield testing from 1993 through 1997 in the USDA-ARS, University of Minnesota program. HJ98 has been the highest yielding line over northern Minnesota environments, similar in yield to Verde but with better scab tolerance. HJ98 is more susceptible to lodging and to fungal foliar leaf diseases than Verde but is highly resistant to prevalent races of stem rust and to leaf rust. HJ98 has scab tolerance judged to be similar to Pioneer 2375, the leading spring wheat variety grown in Minnesota because of its scab tolerance. HJ98 was judged somewhat low in flour extraction based on small plot samples but mixed and baked well, although lower in protein than Grandin. The Spring Wheat Quality Council are large plots and flour extraction was similar to the check variety over environments. Its overall quality is lower than Grandin, the best quality check variety, but was acceptable to domestic millers and bakers.
