It can cause neurologic and liver diseases in animals. Its source of infection and life cycle are unknown. Until now the parasite has been reported only from the U.S. Scientists at the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center and Cornell University report 4 additional cases of acute S. canis infections in dogs from the U.S. This results will help pathologists and parasitologists in the diagnosis of this disease. Technical Abstract: This paper describes acute visceral and neural sarcocystosis in four dogs. One animal was simultaneously infected with distemper virus, and another with Blastomyces dermatitidis. Schizonts and merozoites of Sarcocystis canis were found in the lesions. |
