U.S. Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (H5N1) Research Priorities: October 2024

10/4/2024 - The outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza HPAI A(H5N1) is a unique event that has significant potential to put at risk human and animal health, the viability of affected farms, and the rural economy. So far, the outbreak has impacted more than 200 dairy cattle herds, led to a small number of mild human cases in the United States, and importantly, has not demonstrated that the virus is able to efficiently bind to receptors that predominate in the human upper respiratory tract. However, influenza viruses do have the potential to evolve so it’s critical to continue comprehensive and coordinated, multisectoral surveillance across public health and animal health for these viruses in wild birds, poultry, mammals, and people worldwide to help mitigate the spread and ultimately contain the virus.

Through the research agenda the U.S. Government is laying out its clear set of research priorities to address this outbreak.
