2014 Commercial Release CP 06-2042.

CP 06-2042 was planted to a large increase at muck locations in 2013 and it was released for muck and sand soils at the June 2, 2014, Variety Committee Meeting. The parentage is CP 96-1252 x 01 P 04 and CP 06-2042 has a fiber of 11.44. CP 06-2042 is tall with mostly small to medium barrels but a few large barrels may be present. At the Variety Committee Meeting in June 2014, CP 06-2042 was labeled moderately susceptible to leaf scald and RSD in the artificial leaf scald and RSD inoculation tests. It was also rated moderately resistant to mosaic and smut. Over three years of testing and a total of 76 plots rated, CP 06-2042 had 9 naturally infected leaf scald plots with an average of 3 infected stools per plot on the muck but no natural infection was observed on the sand. CP 06-2042 is rated as susceptible to orange rust ( up to an R-2+) with an average rating of 1.4 in 26 out of 76 plot observations on the muck. On the sand, CP 06-2042 had an average orange rust rating of 1.6 in 6 plots out of 35 plot observations. Brown rust infections were low with an average rating of 1.0 in 5 plots out of 76 plots observed on the muck and no infection observed on the sand. CP 06-2042 does not have the Bru 1 gene that is one of the indicators for brown rust resistance. One stool of smut was observed on the muck and three stools on the sand over three years of testing.

                The three-year production summary showed that the commercial recoverable sugar (CRS) for CP 06-2042 at 238.3 lbs/ton was lower but not significantly lower than CP 89-2143 at 240.7 lbs/ton for all soils. On muck, the CRS for CP 06-2042 was lower but not significantly lower at 233.2 lbs/ton than CP 89-2143 at 237.9 lbs/ton. On sand, the CRS for CP 06-2042 was higher but not significantly higher at 248.5 lbs/ton than CP 89-2143 at 246.3 lbs/ton. Early CRS is measured only once in plant cane and the early CRS for CP06-2042 and CP 89-2143 respectively was 219.7 lbs/ton vs. 212.0 lbs/ton across all soils, 208.0 lbs/ton vs. 197.4 lbs/ton on muck and 239.3 lbs/ton vs. 236.3 lbs/ton on sand. The early CRS for CP 06-2042 was significantly higher than the early CRS of CP 89-2143 on muck and the early CRS of CP 78-1628 (206.8 lbs/ton) on sand. The tons of cane per acre (TCA) for CP 06-2042 at 69.2 tons/acre were significantly higher than CP 89-2143 at 57.4 tons/acre across all soils. On muck, CP 06-2042 had significantly higher TCA at 78.4 tons/ acre than CP 89-2143 at 62.3 tons/acre. The TCA for CP 06-2042 on sand at 50.6 tons/acre was significantly higher than CP 89-2143 at 47.6 tons/acre and CP 78-1628 at 44.7 tons/acre. The pounds of sugar/acre for CP 06-2042 were significantly higher at 16,442 lbs/acre than CP 89-2143 at 13,982 lbs/acre for all soils. The pounds of sugar/acre for CP 06-2042 were significantly higher at 18,346 lbs/acre than CP 89-2143 at 14,995 lbs/acre on muck soils. The pounds of sugar/acre for CP 06-2042 at 12,635 lbs/acre was significantly higher than CP 89-2143 at 11,940 lbs/acre or CP 78-1628 at 11,058 lbs/acre on sand. The economic index ratio for CP 06-2042 vs. CP 89-2143 was $1,296/acre vs. $1,113/acre across all soils with CP 06-2042 being significantly higher. The economic index for CP 06-2042 at $1,442/acre was significantly higher than CP 89-2143 at $1,192/acre on muck soils. On sand soils, the economic index for CP 06-2042 at $1,003/acre was higher than CP 89-2143 at $954/acre and higher than the sand check, CP 78-1628, at $869/acre.

                CP 06-2042 is usually a good to very good germinator and tillering and shading is usually better than CP 89-2143 under normal conditions. CP 06-2042 is usually erect to lightly recumbent in September and early October and may become moderately recumbent as the season progresses. Leaf issues include light to moderate ring spot, light rust mite levels, and sometimes light lacebug levels in the fall. CP 06-2042 has shown moderate flowering beginning in mid to late December. CP 06-2042 has shown low freeze tolerance in terms of sugar degradation following a freeze in tests at The Hague Farm near Gainesville in plant cane in 2011/2012 and in first stubble cane in 2012/2013.

 

 

 

2014 Commercial Release CP 07-2137.               

 

                CP 07-2137 was planted to a large increase at two sand locations in 2013 and it was released for sand soils at the June 2, 2014, Variety Committee Meeting. The parentage is CP 01-2390 x CP 84-1198 and CP 07-2137 has a fiber of 11.09. CP 07-2137 has moderate height with mostly small to medium barrels but a few large barrels may be present.  At the Variety Committee Meeting in June 2014, CP 07-2137 was labeled as susceptible to smut, moderately susceptible to mosaic, moderately resistant to RSD, and resistant to leaf scald in the artificial inoculation tests. Over three years of testing and a total of 35 plots rated on the sand, CP 07-2137 had 1 naturally infected leaf scald plot with an average of 1 infected stool per plot. There were 50 stools of smut found over the same time period but the major portion of that smut was found at one location. Seed for increases was not used from that location. CP 07-2137 is rated as resistant to brown and orange rust with no natural infections found on the sand. CP 07-2137 does not have the Bru 1 gene that is one of the indicators for brown rust resistance.

                The three-year production summary  for sand soils showed that the commercial recoverable sugar (CRS) for CP 07-2137 at 262.9 lbs/ton was higher but not significantly higher than CP 89-2143 at 256.2 lbs/ton or CP 78-1628 at 255.0 lbs/ton. Early CRS is measured only once in plant cane and the early CRS was 229.3 lbs/ton for CP 07-2137, 211.5 lbs/ton for the sand check CP 78-1628, and 227.3 lbs/ton for CP 89-2143. The early CRS for CP 07-2137 was significantly higher than the early CRS of CP 78-1628 but not the early CRS of CP 89-2143. The average tons of cane per acre (TCA) for CP 07-2137 at 56.2 tons/acre were significantly higher than CP 78-1628 at 42.3 tons/acre and CP 89-2143 at 46.0 tons/acre. The pounds of sugar/acre for CP 07-2137 were significantly higher at 15,136 lbs/acre than CP 78-1628 at 11,064 lbs/acre or CP 89-2143 at 12,270 lbs/acre. The economic index for CP 07-2137 at $1,359/acre was significantly higher than that of CP 78-1628 at $932/acre and CP 89-2143 at $1,071/acre.

                CP 07-2137 is usually a good to very good germinator. Height, tillering, and shading are usually less than or equal to CP 89-2143 under normal conditions in the spring. CP 07-2137 is usually erect to lightly recumbent. Leaf issues include light ring spot, light to moderate rust mite levels, and some light to moderate purpling of the leaves in late winter and early spring caused by cool temperatures. CP 07-2137 has shown moderate to low freeze tolerance in terms of sugar degradation following a freeze in tests at The Hague Farm near Gainesville in plant cane in 2012/2013 and in first stubble cane in 2013/2014.

CP 07-2137
