Invasive Plant Removal: December 6, 2019

Several Scientists and Scientific Technicians from IPRL volunteered their administrative excused absence leave time to assist many Broward County Park employees removing the invasive fern Tectaria incisa from the Fern Forest Nature Center. IPRL was closed Friday December 6th due to a termite treatment, but several of the staff members used it as an outreach activity. IPRL and Broward County Parks work together often on invasive plant issues and research. During a few hours of removal 62 large construction size bags were filled of this invasive plant, in hopes the native fern Tectaria heracleifolia will begin to populate in the areas of the nature center in the future.

December Holiday Activities

On December 12th several staff members brought their lunch and a small gift to participate in a "White Elephant Gift Exchange".

December 14th was a "Pot Luck" event at the University of Florida on the shared property where our facility is located. Every year the University of Florida hosts a Holiday Lunch and all the activities during the year are shared along with Broward County Extension and many other agencies that are associated. It is always a pleasure to review and appreciate the research and learning experience we all share.

Last year several individual groups at the facility each picked a holiday which is celebrated during the month of December. They included Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Christmas, Omisoka, and Diwali. Most of the items created were saved and displayed again this year, bringing awareness to realize that there are many other holidays celebrated in December.
