ARS scientists continue to be recognized internationally as leading experts in fire ant and pest ant research.
ARS scientists combine fundamental and applied research approaches with an overarching, long-term objective of
developing sustainable invasive pest ant control in the United States. During the 2008-2013 project cycle, ARS
scientists focused research efforts in four core areas, genetics, biocontrol, semiochemicals, and integrated pest
management. While these areas are distinct, they are interdependent and fully integrated. For example, the
genomics research accelerated discovery of new pathogens with potential for use as classical biological control
agents or biopesticides, and helped identify vulnerable genes for use as targets for RNA interference. Research
conducted is strongly collaborative, with each core area benefitting from the extensive expertise of each scientist.
