- Discovered the presence of bovine eye parasites (Thelazia gulosa and Thelazia skrjabini) in the US and elucidated their life cycle in cattle and in the face fly vector (Musca autumnalis).
- Determined the ecological and behavioral factors that determine the effectiveness of house fly predators as biological control agents.
- Conducted research on filth flies on dairies in that led to development of an effective bio-based IPM program for dairy farmers in the Northeast.
- Compared methods for initiating epizootics of the fungus Entomophthora muscae in house fly populations on dairy farms.
- Co-inventor of a mechanical barrier to prevent damage caused by litter beetle larvae to poultry facilities.
- Discovered a pathogenic microorganism (Nosema muscidifuracis) infecting filth fly parasitoids; characterized the life cycle, identified the impact of infection on wasp fitness, and developed a disease management program.
- Defined the ecological characteristics of native and exotic fly parasitoid species to determine the settings in which they would be most effective.
- Compared the effectiveness and sensitivity of outdoor fly sampling methods and developed a new method to collect flies for fly-borne pathogen surveys.
- Developed an insecticide-treated visual target for use as perimeter protection from immigrating flies.
