Field Guide to USDA-ARS TARS Plant Collections |
This publication is a guide to the miscellaneous plant genetic resource collections at the Tropical Agriculture Research Station (TARS) which is part of the Agriculture Research Service (ARS) of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The guide provides information on many of the timber, fruit, nut and spice trees as well as woody and herbaceous ornamental germplasm accessions on the TARS grounds in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. The guide also includes an introduction/background section, additional taxonomical information on germplasm accessions, an index with common and scientific names, as well as instructions on how to use the guide.
The TARS site is part of the National Plant Germplasm System (NPGS), and as such has acquired, collected, preserved, propagated and evaluated plant germplasm at the current location since its inception in 1901. Plant genetic resources held at TARS can be officially requested for research and educational purposes by registering and filling out pertinent information at the GRIN website https://npgsweb.ars-grin.gov. The publication can be downloaded as a PDF document and may be reprinted. However, when using this document for educational and research purposes the USDA and the authors should be acknowledged.
