Rice Germplasm and Genetic Stocks Oryza Best Management Practices and Operating Procedures
The “Rice Germplasm and Genetic Stocks Oryza Best Management Practices and Operating Procedures Handbook” was written to facilitate the effective and efficient evaluation and curation of the rice germplasm in the National Small Grains Collection (NSGC) at Aberdeen, Idaho and the Genetic Stocks Oryza (GSOR) germplasm collection at Stuttgart, Arkansas. This handbook includes a comprehensive explanation of phenotypic descriptors for consistency and efficiency, while ensuring accessions are true-to-type to preserve their genetic identities. The document also outlines an approach to identify and reduce redundancy in the collection through genotypic and phenotypic characterization. These methods and this information enhances the value of the germplasm and facilitates more targeted utilization. This allows U.S. rice breeders and specialty farmers to better identify rice germplasm that may be useful in their breeding programs and/or production system.
