"Science Day for Kids"   Mar 14, 2007

     Participant: EEO Committee Member Rachel Angel.     "Science Day for Kids" was held at the Dairy Forage Research Center in Madison, Wisconsin from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  The event featured a day at work with the USDA Agricultural Research Service scientists.  Highlights included collecting samples of rumen contents from dairy cows, microscopic examination of the rumen, chromatography of candy, cucumber research, sampling of liquid nitrogen ice cream, and the benefits of cereal crops in the human diet.  About thirty fourth graders with their teachers participated in the very hands-on activities.

Wisconsin State Fair ("Ag Ventures" Day)   Aug 7, 2007

     Rachel Angel from the EEO Committee and student Alex Seay had an exhibit on "Science in Your Shopping Cart" and "Oat and Barley Research and Nutrition".  Lots of food products made from oats and barley were on display.  The exhibit promoted ARS accomplishments and explained the research done by the Cereal Crops Research Unit.  Magazines "Science in Your Shopping Cart" and "Midwest Area Research Highlights for 2005-2006" from the ARS public affairs office were handed out.

 

University of Wisconsin - Madison, College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS), "Career and Internship Fair",  Sep 25, 2007

     Participants:  Marie Bishop, EEO officer, from Peoria, IL., John Herbst and Keith Gilchrist from Cereal Crops Research Unit, Dr. Paul Bethke and Dr. David Spooner from Vegetable Crops Research Unit in Madison, WI.     Local and national vacancy announcement handouts were available.  Participants were available to answer questions on subjects ranging from research topics (local and ARS national programs) to jobs (when and how to apply) to the ARS presence on the internet.
