All efforts to monitor and reduce mycotoxin contamination require reliable methods that detect and measure mycotoxins. Therefore, a major goal of MPM research is to develop sensitive and cost effective methods for detecting and measuring mycotoxins. 

Fungi that produce harmful mycotoxins can infect and contaminate many different cereal crops. Scientists in the MPM unit are helping growers and grain processors to mitigate losses and ensure food safety.

MPM scientists are analyzing the diversity of devastating Fusarium fungal pathogens that cause disease of cereal crops and contaminate grain with harmful toxins. By understanding how Fusarium pathogen genomics influence disease outbreaks scientists can help farmers develop targeted control strategies to mitigate crop losses and ensure food safety.
