How to Reach the Eastern Regional Research Center from Center City (downtown Philadelphia)

By Automobile

Follow signs to the Schuylkill Expressway (I-76 West); use directions from Philadelphia International Airport to ERRC via I-76 West and Center City.

By Commuter Train (SEPTA)

There are three downtown stations: Market East Station at 11th & Market Streets; Penn Center Station at 16th & Kennedy Blvd.; and 30th Street Station at 30th and Market Streets. From any of these three stations, take the Chestnut Hill East (R7) train to the Wyndmoor Station. ERRC is a 5-block walk Northeast of the Station on Mermaid Lane. As an alternative, take the Chestnut Hill West (R8) train to the Chestnut Hill West Station. ERRC is 1&1/2 miles from the Chestnut Hill West Station. Taxis are available at the Chestnut Hill West Station or take a Southbound "L" bus marked "Broad & Olney Terminal" to Stenton Avenue and Mermaid Lane and walk left (Northeast) on Mermaid Lane 3 blocks to ERRC.

By Local Transportation

Take the Broad Street Subway Northbound to Olney Avenue. Ask for a transfer when paying fare. At Olney Avenue, transfer to an "L" bus marked "Erdenheim" or "Plymouth Metting Mall" at stairway C of Broad Street and Olney Avenue. Get off bus at Mermaid Lane and Stenton Avenue, and walk right (Northeast) on Mermaid Lane 3 blocks to ERRC.

The Philadelphia International Airport

By Train

Take the Airport Rail Line to downtown locations or Jenkintown.  Refer to the section "FROM CENTER CITY (DOWNTOWN PHILADELPHIA) for several options.  The airport Rail Line serves the Jenkintown Station directly.  From there a taxi can be taken to ERRC.

By Airport Shuttles

At the baggage terminal inside the airport, there is a Ground Transportation information desk.  Tropiano Transportation shuttle provides hourly services to selected hotels (dial #19 or 1-800-559-2040).  A direct shuttle to ERRC and the Chestnut Hill Hotel can be provided by USA Limo (dial #14 or 1-610-525-0513).  Standing taxis are available.

By Car (Three Choices)

(1)

Via I-76 West and Center City (Estimated time: 45 minutes; 19 miles; avoid during rush hour):

• From the airport, take I-95 North ramp toward PA-291/Philadelphia/New Jersey.  Then get in the Right Lane.
• Take Exit 13 toward I-76 West/Valley Forge/PA-291/Island Ave.
• Proceed onto Penrose Ave./PA-291 East toward I-76 West.  Stay in the Left Lane.  You will be crossing over the George C. Platt Memorial bridge.
• Turn Left at the first traffic light onto 26th Street (3.5 miles from airport).
• Stay in the left lane and continue as 26th Street becomes I-76 West upon emerging from the underpass.  STAY FAR LEFT FOR SAFETY!
• Proceed on I-76 West past the Center City are and I-676 junction (7.5 miles from airport).
• Continue on I-76 West.  Stay in the 2nd Lane from Left.  (Pass U.S. Route 1 North, Exit 340B.)
• Take Exit 340A on the right side from I-76 at "Lincoln Drive/Kelly Drive". Turn Right at bottom of ramp and cross City Avenue Bridge.  Stay in center lane across bridge.
• Proceed onto Lincoln Drive (12.7 miles from airport).  Switch into right lane when possible.
• Continue on Lincoln Drive until it ends at Allens Lane (16.5 miles from airport).
• Turn Right onto Allens Lane.  Turn Left onto Germantown Ave.  At the second light turn Right onto Cresheim Valley Drive until it ends at Stenton Ave. (17.9 miles from airport).
• Turn Left onto Stenton Ave. (0.1 mile) and Right at next light onto Mermaid Lane. 
• The ERRC entrance is 3 blocks from Stenton Ave. after the stop sign at East Lane.  Park in the Front Loop in a marked visitor's space.  Check in with the Receptionist in the Main Lobby.

Via I-476 North and Fort Washington (Estimated time: 1 hour; 35 miles)

• From the airport, exit onto I-95 South (i.e. toward Delaware, and away from Philadelphia)
• Proceed on I-95 South for 5 miles.  Merge Right onto I-476 North at Exit 7 toward Plymouth Meeting.
• Proceed on I-476 to Exit 20 at Plymouth Meeting (20 miles), to the PA Turnpike (I-276).
• Take the PA Turnpike East (toward New Jersey) one interchange to Exit 339 at Fort Washington (5 miles). Beyond the toll booth proceed under the overpass and Right onto Route 309 South ramp.
• Take Route 309 South for 2.3 miles to the Springfield/Papermill Road exit.
• At the bottom of the ramp, turn Right (Paper Mill Road) and go 0.3 miles to the second traffic light (Cheltenham Ave.).
• Turn Left onto Cheltenham Ave.  Travel 1.35 miles (pass Willow Grove Ave.) to the third street on the right (Mermaid Lane).
• Turn Right onto Mermaid Lane.  Travel 0.7 miles.  ERRC is on the Left Side.  Drive along the property line to the Stop Sign at East Lane.  Turn Left into the front drive and park in the Front Loop in a marked visitor's space.  Check in with the Receptionist in the Main Lobby.

Via I-476 North and Plymouth Meeting (1 hour; 32 miles)

• From the airport exit onto I-95 South (i.e., toward Delaware and away from Philadelphia)
• Proceed on I-95 South for 5 miles.  Merge Right onto I-476 North at Exit 7 toward Plymouth Meeting.
• Proceed on I-476 for 20 miles to Exit 19 at Germantown Pike - East/Plymouth Meeting
• Trave 0.5 miles to light at Germantown Pike.  Stay in the right lane.
• Turn Right onto Germantown Pike.  Take Germantown Pike East into the City of Philadelphia.  Travel 5.1 miles on Germantown Ave. passing Chestnut Hill Hospital.
• At the second light after the streetcar tracks & cobblestones start, turn Left onto Evergreen Ave.
• Travel 0.4 miles on Evergreen Ave.  Turn Right onto Stenton Ave.
• Travel 0.8 miles on Stenton Ave.  Pass lights at Gravers Lane and Willow Grove Ave.
• At the next light, turn Left onto Mermaid Lane.
• The ERRC entrance is 3 blocks from Stenton Ave. after the stop sign at East Lane.  Park in the Front Loop in a marked visitor's space.  Check in with the Receptionist in the Main Lobby.
