Biography and Research

Korey Brownstein has worked as a Research Chemist at ARS in Peoria since 2023. After graduating with a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of Missouri, he received a Ph.D. in Molecular Plant Sciences from Washington State University in 2018. His dissertation involved using metabolomics to investigate Native American medicinal plants and their uses. Before joining the ARS team, he was a postdoctoral fellow at The University of Chicago and ARS.

Dr. Brownstein's current research involves identifying, isolating, and characterizing natural products derived from plants (i.e., phytochemicals). His research goals include developing high-throughput and robust methods for not only analyzing and purifying phytochemicals from high-value agricultural crops but also identifying value-added natural products from low-value resources. Impact from this research will lead to novel methods for analyzing high-value natural products, as well as new food ingredients, products that benefit human health, and natural pesticides derived from plants.
