Chemist
Biography
Dr. Derek D. Bussan, an accomplished analytical chemist, joined the Grand Forks Human Nutrition Research Center in February 2023. Prior to this, he served as an Assistant Professor at Eastern Kentucky University, where he taught various chemistry courses, including those in forensic sciences. During his tenure there, he continued to develop his expertise in analytical chemistry techniques.
Dr. Bussan earned his Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Mississippi and an MBA from Eastern Kentucky University. His career is marked by a strong dedication to nutritional science and chemical analysis.
At GFHNRC, Dr. Bussan continues to make significant contributions to the field, particularly in analytical chemistry measurement techniques for the analysis in animal, food, and human studies. He is an active member of the American Society for Nutrition and serves on the editorial boards of Biological Trace Element Research and the Journal of Distilling Science.
Research Interests
Dr. Bussan's research focuses on applying advanced analytical chemistry techniques in nutrition, especially in trace elemental and organic analysis in biological matrices.
Research Accomplishments
- Developed a fast, straightforward, and inexpensive method for the authentication of Baijiu spirit samples by fluorescence spectroscopy, published in "Beverages."
- Conducted a study on the quantification of trace elements in surgical and KN95 face masks widely used during the SARS-COVID-19 pandemic, featured in "Science of the Total Environment."
- Authored a significant publication at GFHNRC titled "How ICP-OES changed the face of trace element analysis: Review of the global application landscape," also in "Science of the Total Environment."
