Research Project: Effect of Cercospora Leaf Spot on Sugarbeet Root Storage

Location: Sugarbeet Research

Project Number: 3060-21000-045-004-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Feb 1, 2019
End Date: Dec 31, 2023

Objective:
The objective of this work is to determine how the severity of Cercospora leaf spot (CLS) affects sugarbeet root deterioration during storage.

Approach:
Plants with varying severities of CLS will be produced by NDSU by inoculating field-grown plants with C. beticola-infected leaves and treatment with varying number of fungicide treatments during production. NDSU cooperator will rate the severity of disease symptoms and harvest roots from plants with no disease, low, moderate, and severe disease symptoms. USDA will determine the impact of CLS severity on sugarbeet root storage properties by storing roots at 5°C and evaluating storage properties after 0, 30, 90 and 120 days. Storage properties to be evaluated include root respiration rate, sucrose loss in storage, invert sugar accumulation, loss to molasses, and recoverable sugar per ton.
