Location: Nutrition, Food Safety/Quality
Project Number: 0204-41510-001-100-G
Project Type: Grant
Start Date: Sep 1, 2021
End Date: Aug 31, 2025
Objective:
An ad hoc committee will be convened under the auspices of The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to assess human requirements for energy intake (including the contribution of alcohol and gut microbiota digestible dietary fiber) and energy expenditure. The review will consider age, sex, body size, body composition, level of physical activity, and race/ethnicity, along with other factors that may be warranted, based on available data. The committee will consider other significant variables including energy needed for growth and maturation and to support pregnancy; energy needs postpartum; and amounts to achieve and maintain weight loss or weight gain; requirements to support recovery from disease and treatments or interventions such as surgery; and the health consequences of chronic over- or under nutrition across the life span. Special considerations will be given to each age-sex group across the life span.
Approach:
An ad hoc committee of approximately 8 members with expertise in energy metabolism across the lifespan including pregnancy and lactation and menopause; physical activity; human nutrition across the lifespan; clinical trials, including design and conduct of diet interventions; methods in energy metabolism and body composition; systematic review methodology including quality and risk of bias assessment; statistics, modeling, and analysis methods; application of the DRI Framework and use of the IAEA database will be convened by The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. The committee will hold a one-half day web-based open meeting, and up to 4 closed meetings. Conference call discussions will be scheduled as needed to review and identify relevant publication abstracts and develop a pre-publication and a final report. The report will be reviewed through RRC review procedures prior to public release. A PDF file of the summary will be made available to sponsors, and posted on the project website.
