Research Project: Development of Effective Analytical Methods for Evaluation of Hemp Materials & Processing Products for Phytochemical Composition, incl Cannabinoids

Location: Functional Foods Research

Project Number: 5010-41000-183-003-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2020
End Date: Mar 31, 2024

Objective:
Generate standardized hemp samples to develop methodology for compositional analyses of hemp that can be universally adopted by analytical chemists.

Approach:
Cooperator’s hemp germplasm will be subjected to quantitative compositional analyses by multiple laboratories. Data generated from these analyses will be used to develop and refine an HPLC-UV method of analyses and the method will be tested initially using the Cooperator’s germplasm. The collective data from ARS and other laboratories will be used to select hemp germplasm for further development and selection. After further testing and evaluation, the method will be submitted for consideration by NIST or other organizations for adoption as a standard methodology for this analysis.
