Project Number: 2090-21220-003-001-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Aug 1, 2021
End Date: Jul 31, 2026
Objective:
To facilitate disease control by identifying candidate genes underlying host resistance to fungal and viral pathogens in common bean.
Approach:
1) Generate different common bean populations with inbred lines segregating for resistances to bean rust, Sclerotinia white mold, Bean common mosaic virus, and Beet curly top virus.
2) Phenotype the segregating individuals for reactions to the different pathogens using greenhouse and field screening protocols.
3) Genotype the individuals using single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and insertions and deletions (InDels) obtained by Next-Generation sequencing.
4) Use association and linkage mapping to identify genic regions and candidate genes.
5) Develop markers for marker-assisted selection of the genes.
6) Collect pathogen isolates and characterize them against a set of differential host genotypes and by genomic sequencing.
