Research Project: Integrated Weed Management for Washington State Blueberry and Grape Production

Location: Horticultural Crops Production and Genetic Improvement Research Unit

Project Number: 2072-21000-057-042-G
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: May 1, 2024
End Date: Oct 31, 2025

Objective:
1. Investigate the use of chemical and non-chemical weed control options for season-long weed management in Washington State blueberry and grape production. 2. Economical estimation of the tested weed management practices.

Approach:
Experiments will be carried out at blueberry and vineyards in Washington State growing seasons to evaluate chemical and non-chemical methods for season-long weed management. The study will use a randomized complete block design with 3 replications. All weed species present on the study site will be documented. Depending on the uniformity of present weed species, at least one dominant broadleaf and one dominant grass species will be evaluated for weed control. Total grass and broadleaf weed biomass will be collected and weighed in the laboratory. Blueberry or grape yield will be recorded at the end of the season. The cost of each treatment throughout the season will be documented. The net income at the end of the season will be calculated to give growers an idea of the economic estimation when choosing management tactics.
