Location: Grain Legume Genetics Physiology Research
Project Number: 2090-21000-038-005-T
Project Type: Trust Fund Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Mar 9, 2022
End Date: Mar 8, 2027
Objective:
Develop improved cultivars of pea, lentil, and chickpea that are adapted to existing and emerging areas of production for cool season grain legumes.
Approach:
Cyclical hybridization including single, double and triple crosses will be conducted to combine favorable alleles for traits of interest. Parental lines will include adapted germplasm, commercial cultivars and germplasm accessions from the various international germplasm repositories. Parents will be selected based on their performance for traits of existing and emerging importance, including yield, resistance to selected diseases, seed quality, early maturity, winter hardiness, and nutritional qualities. Generational increases of populations will be conducted in field and greenhouse environments. Select populations and breeding lines will be increased at counter-season nurseries.
