Research Project: Development and Maintenance of a Botanical Database

Location: Methods and Application of Food Composition Laboratory

Project Number: 8040-52000-066-074-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 28, 2022
End Date: Aug 31, 2023

Objective:
Botanical supplements are complex mixtures of whole plant(s) and chemical components which are sold on the market to promote health and wellness. Knowledge of the composition of the supplements is critical to determining their authenticity and efficacy. USDA will develop and maintain a database for raw botanical materials and commercial botanical supplements obtained using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-high resolution accurate mass tandem mass spectrometry.

Approach:
The cooperator will assemble the skilled programmers to construct a framework for organizing data for botanical materials and commercial botanical supplements based on data obtained by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-high resolution accurate mass tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-HRAM/MSn). The cooperator will develop a program that will allow users to obtain compositional data for botanicals identified by scientific or common names. The program will provide chromatograms and mass tables for each botanical. The program will also allow users to search for botanicals containing components by name, mass, or chemical formula. Botanical identification will be possible by searching on multiple components.
