Research Project: Expanding Aronia and Elderberry Production on Subprime Land in the Pacific Northwest

Location: Horticultural Crops Production and Genetic Improvement Research Unit

Project Number: 2072-21000-060-017-G
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: May 1, 2024
End Date: Oct 31, 2025

Objective:
1. Determine best practices for commercial organic establishment and management of aronia berry and elderberry in the Pacific Northwest. 2. Develop an enterprise budget for organic aronia and elderberry production for small and mid-sized farms in the Pacific Northwest and identify processing opportunities, market potential, and barriers to entry. 3.

Approach:
Measure growth, precocity, and horticultural viability of improved aronia and elderberry cultivars planted at different densities on subprime riparian land, with and without supplemental irrigation. measuring growth, precocity, and horticultural viability of improved aronia and elderberry cultivars planted at different densities on subprime riparian land, with and without supplemental irrigation. The project team will perform a market analysis to explore processing and marketing opportunities for producers. This will include modeling expected economic returns and determining consumer willingness to pay for local and organic aronia and elderberry products.
