Objective:
Determine a suite of native prairie plant species that have medicinal and edible uses and evaluate their feasibility for plant propagation.

Approach:
The cooperator will use traditional expert knowledge and survey techniques to develop and prioritize a list of culturally significant native prairie plants that have edible, medicinal, cultural and spiritual uses. The cooperator will also develop a literature review of on the state of knowledge of current practices. ARS will provide greenhouse and field facilities for propagating plants. Both the cooperator and ARS will include local Tribal College students in the process. Deliverables from this agreement will include a Best Practices/Summary on developing collaborations between ARS and 1994 Tribal Colleges and Universities and a feasibility study for future research on propagating culturally significant native plant species.
