Research Project: Establishment and Characterization of Liver Organoids from Layer Chickens

Location: Plant Genetics Research

Project Number: 5070-31320-001-011-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 1, 2023
End Date: Jun 30, 2026

Objective:
To generate liver organoids by using tissue from embryonic layer chickens in order to study metabolic features and disorders.

Approach:
The Cooperator will collect liver tissues from embryonic layer chickens at day 14 of incubation and isolate single cells for the establishment of organoids. If required, the Cooperator will use a cell factory system to produce recombinant avian proteins that are necessary for the development of organoids from chickens. The organoids will be grown, passaged, cryopreserved, and partially characterized by the Cooperator for liver-specific markers and functions. The PI will perform further characterization of cell populations within the organoids as well as metabolic characteristics.
