Research Project: Dietary Database Technical Support for National Surveillance

Location: Food Surveys Research Group

Project Number: 8040-10700-001-013-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 25, 2023
End Date: Sep 24, 2028

Objective:
To analyze and report national dietary intake data collected in What We Eat in America (WWEIA), National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) in various scientific venues to address topical nutrition issues, and review and update USDA’s Automated Multiple-Pass Method (AMPM), and the Food and Nutrient Database for Dietary Studies (FNDDS) to assure that information collected and reported about intakes of foods and beverages in WWEIA are current with today’s food supply changes.

Approach:
WWEIA, NHANES dietary data will be reviewed and analyzed to include new topics of importance to stakeholders and data users. USDA's AMPM updates are divided by 130 AMPM pathway groups of food and beverages that have related questioning to elicit the required detailed information. Review and update of questions and response options by selected pathway groups will be conducted. Tasks to be completed for each group will include: 1) review of current intake data and various references to identify changes in the food supply regarding the foods/beverages, 2) determine and prepare changes to AMPM and FNDDS, and 3) test AMPM and FNDDS to assure that changes have been correctly operationalized.
