Research Project: Model Based Evaluation of Grape Vineyard Exposure to Wildfire Smoke

Location: Horticultural Crops Production and Genetic Improvement Research Unit

Project Number: 2072-21000-057-040-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jan 1, 2024
End Date: Dec 31, 2026

Objective:
Develop model-based capabilities to compile season long records of smoke exposure and associated smoke history in grape vineyards.

Approach:
This effort is intended to leverage existing and ongoing research efforts to predict smoke exposure in vineyards and grape quality. We plan to develop a new modeling system that can downscale and integrate modeled and measured smoke data to the vineyard block and or sub-block scale. A key output of this system will be past and near future smoke exposure. The exposure and history will be compiled from model based output (HRRR smoke data) and will use the QES (Quick Environmental Simulation) computational framework created at the University of Utah by the partner’s research group. The university has computational resources to go along with the modeling system which can be utilized for this research.
