Research Project: Modernization of the Child Nutrition Database (CNDB)

Location: Nutrition, Food Safety/Quality

Project Number: 0204-41510-001-107-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2023
End Date: Aug 31, 2025

Objective:
The objective is to continue work with the Partnership to improve the use of the Branded Foods process for collecting up-to-date nutrient and serving size information on food items marketed and sold to school food service for inclusion in the CNDB. This will be done utilizing the existing infrastructure between The Partnership for Branded Foods, currently including GS1 US, 1WorldSync, and University of Maryland. In addition, FNS seeks to expand the process to obtain USDA Foods data that is currently being collected through GS1 GDSN. FNS would also like to expand the data processing and compilation services provided by The Partnership to allow for quality control and compilation of the manufacturers’ data, including USDA Foods data, into the CNDB, as well as providing support to food manufacturers who submit their data for CNDB.

Approach:
The scope of this agreement covers activities related to the GS1 GDSN data repository, 1WorldSync data extraction processes and programs, and University of Maryland data cleansing and formatting activities. This also includes activities related to the product data from food manufacturers (suppliers who market and sell their products to K-12 school food service). Specifically, those products published to the Branded Foods GLN with the Child Nutrition Food Programs trade channel.
