Research Project: Characterizing Ploidy and Pollen of Caneberry Cultivars, Advanced Selections, and Hybrids to Support Breeding

Location: Horticultural Crops Production and Genetic Improvement Research Unit

Project Number: 2072-21000-060-016-G
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: May 1, 2024
End Date: Oct 31, 2025

Objective:
1. Breed cultivars that are thornless, high-yielding, winter hardy, machine harvestable, disease resistant, and have superior fruit quality. 2. Develop cultivars that are summer-bearing, high-yielding, winter hardy, machine harvestable, disease resistant, virus resistant, and have superior fresh and processed fruit quality.

Approach:
We will evaluate a broad panel of cultivars, advanced selections, and hybrid families that includes crosses among market classes. We will use flow cytometry to rapidly analyze DNA content and infer ploidy levels. Pollen analysis will be done by a similar, but more recently developed variation of flow cytometry called impedance flow cytometry.
