Research Project: Water Erosion Prediction Project (WEPP)

Location: National Soil Erosion Research Laboratory

Project Number: 5020-12130-004-005-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Sep 12, 2018
End Date: Sep 11, 2024

Objective:
To develop and improve water erosion software to be used by field staff via the web-based version of WEPP.

Approach:
This research will develop technical databases, erosion prediction technology improvements, utility for use by field staff, and a small watershed erosion prediction technology that includes ephemeral gully erosion prediction to adapt the ARS Water Erosion Prediction Project (WEPP) software into a foundation tool for conservation planning use. This technology would not only support the stand-alone version of WEPP but also the Integrated Erosion Tool version 2 (IET2), RSET, and the Conservation Resources Land Management Operations Database (CR LMOD) that supports the Conservation Streamlining Initiative (CDSI). The approach will utilize continuous science improvement for water erosion and sediment delivery; and better utilization of WEPP science to improve soil health, water quality, and water budget information. Coordination with ARS WEPP developers will continue to integrate and utilize applicable science to address these components. One part of the project will include coordination with the Wind Erosion Prediction System (WEPS) development team, and an annual meeting with ARS-WEPP, ARS-WEPS, and Cooperator project contacts and others.
