Agricultural Engineer
Biography and Research
Dennis Flanagan has been at the NSERL since 1984, first as a Purdue University graduate student conducting his M.S. thesis and Ph.D. dissertation research in soil erosion mechanics, then as an Agricultural Engineer leading field research efforts in 1988-89. After obtaining his Ph.D. degree in Agricultural Engineering, he became a scientist and Research Agricultural Engineer at the NSERL in 1989, and now also holds an adjunct full Professor appointment in the Department of Agricultural & Biological Engineering at Purdue. He is nationally and internationally recognized as an expert and scholar in soil and water conservation, natural resources, soil erosion mechanics, erosion control, and erosion prediction technologies. In addition to laboratory and field experimentation in erosion mechanics and erosion control methodologies, since 1999 he has been the leader of the Water Erosion Prediction Project (WEPP) modeling efforts, aimed at providing process-based soil erosion prediction technologies to federal action agency staff and others involved in soil and water conservation planning activities. He received his B.S. in Agricultural Engineering from the Ohio State University, before his two degrees from Purdue. In 2011 he was named a Fellow of the American Society of Agricultural & Biological Engineers (ASABE), his main professional society. He has also organized several international symposia on soil erosion research and agriculture and environmental concerns. He was chair of the ASABE 2023 Soil Erosion under a Changing Climate international symposium, that was held January 8-13, 2023 in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico.
