Objective:
The United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, hereinafter referred to as “ARS”, and ILSI North America; GS1 US; 1WorldSync; Label Insight; University of Maryland, Joint Institute for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition in furtherance of ILSI North America; GS1 US; 1WorldSync; Label Insight; University of Maryland, Joint Institute for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition will be collectively referred to as “the Participants,” hereby affirm their mutual interest in, and desire to broaden, collaborate to deliver comprehensive, nutrient composition and ingredient information on branded foods and store-brand data will be made available to governments, the public health research community, and the food and beverage industry. The data provided voluntarily by the industry will augment the USDA Food DataCentral. The focus will be on branded foods, expandable to foodservice data, store-brand data and potentially branded restaurant foods. The Participants agree to work together toward common goals of mutual interest, mutual understandings, and efficient administration of programs of mutual interest. Nothing in this broad understanding is to be construed as interfering in any way with the basic responsibilities and authority of any Participants for independent action. This Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) defines in general terms the basis on which the Participants intend to coordinate their independent activities. Individual projects may be developed among the Participants that outline specific research projects.

Approach:
The purpose of this MOU, A Partnership for Public Health: The USDA Global Branded Food Products Database is a public-private partnership, among the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the ILSI North America, GS1 US, 1WorldSync, Label Insight, and the University of Maryland, whose goal is to enhance public health and to share open data by facilitating the augmentation the USDA FoodData Central with nutrient composition and ingredient information on branded foods. The USDA Global Branded Food Products Database is seamlessly integrated into the USDA FoodData Central, and ensures that these data elements are publicly available to those who will utilize them. This includes, but is not limited to, federal agencies, the research community, international databases, proprietary databases and end users, the food industry, and consumers. The public-private partnership will collaborate to deliver comprehensive, nutrient composition and ingredient information on branded foods and store-brand data will be made available to governments, the public health research community, and the food and beverage industry. The data provided voluntarily by the industry will augment the USDA Food DataCentral. The focus will be on branded foods, expandable to foodservice data, store-brand data and potentially branded restaurant foods. This will MOU defines theParenership focus on mutual collaboration/facilitating the acquisition of data to add to the Global Branded Food Products Database and seamlessly integrated into the USDA FoodData Central. To this end, the Participants may jointly explore and coordinate research activities of mutual interest, which would be implemented by mutual understanding and in conformity with the regulations and policies of both Participants.
