Research Project: Genomic Epidemiology of Campylobacter to Improve Disease Control in Low and Middle Income Countries

Location: Produce Safety and Microbiology Research

Project Number: 2030-42000-055-001-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Mar 15, 2021
End Date: Feb 28, 2025

Objective:
The objectives of the project are: 1) Identify and validate host segregating genomic features of Campylobacter from putative zoonotic sources. 2) Characterize genomes of Campylobacter strains that cause disease in humans as well as features associated with persistent asymptomatic carriage. 3) Estimate the human disease attributed to domestic and industrial poultry and swine through source attribution models using complementary approaches of frequency matching and population genetics-based approaches.

Approach:
We will construct a reference set of whole genome sequences of Campylobacter through the systematic sampling of principal zoonotic hosts (mainly domestic and industrial poultry and swine) in the community, region and country (Peru) to make accurate determination regarding the relative attribution of human cases to different sources and compare these sequences to global genomes. Additionally, we will sequence and characterize genomes of Campylobacter strains from humans and determine features associated with persistent asymptomatic carriage. Finally, we will estimate the human disease attributed to domestic and industrial poultry and swine through source attribution models using complementary approaches of frequency matching and population genetics-based approaches.
