Research Project: New Technologies to Study Virus-host Interactions to Identify Strategies for Sugarbeet Viral Disease Management

Location: Sugarbeet Research

Project Number: 3060-21000-045-006-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 1, 2021
End Date: May 31, 2025

Objective:
1) Identify host factors interacting with viruses using cell biology, biochemistry, and proteomics to understand sugarbeet-infecting viral disease development in plants. 2) Determine sub-cellular localization of viruses and viral proteins using fluorescence labelling technologies. 3) Evaluate candidate host factors for disease development for formulating viral disease management strategies.

Approach:
The cooperator will carry out the following: 1) Molecular cloning for generating infectious viral clones to demonstrate proof-of-concept of corresponding viral diseases in plants. 2) Fluorescent labelling of viruses and viral proteins to determine cellular localization of viruses. 3) Expression of peptide-tagged individual viral proteins in planta and pull-down assays to determine associated host counterparts and their functions. 4) Evaluation of identified candidate host factors in providing tolerance to virus diseases to formulate new strategies for sugarbeet viral disease management.
