Location: Nutrition, Food Safety/Quality

Project Number: 0204-41510-001-080-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 1, 2021
End Date: Jun 30, 2024

Objective:
Enhance USDA-ARS GBFPD and expand use with other U.S. government agencies. This includes transparency and data collection for foods and beverages in support of domestic nutrition programs. Understanding agency needs for nutrition programs/initiatives and identifying how to meet these needs by expanding the Database, with food categories, additional data collection, and new data validations.

Approach:
GS1 US will use the barcode standardization method they developed for identifying products and capturing product data has evolved into what is now known as the GS1 System. This approach will be used to capture institutional foods which have been approved for the USDA School lunch programs GS1 Standards continue to be widely implemented across the food supply chain, as is the GS1 Global Data Synchronization Network™ (GDSN®) which is used to share GS1 standards-based product information among trading partners. GS1 will provide electronically he label information for institutional foods and modify them to fit the requirements of the USDA Global Branded Foods Database to be used by the FNS School lunch program stakeholders. USDA ARS will provide funding to GS1 US ("cooperator") for services to leverage commercial private sector global standards use in their operations and the industry practice of the GDSN to facilitate the automatic movement of nutritional data from Institutional food manufacturers to the ARS National Nutrient Database.
