Research Project: Genebanking Seeds of U.S. Native Species for the Seeds of Success (SOS) National Collection

Location: Agricultural Genetic Resources Preservation Research

Project Number: 3012-21000-017-009-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Jul 31, 2021
End Date: Jul 31, 2026

Objective:
To ensure genebank seeds collected through the SOS program from species native to the US are available for research and restoration.

Approach:
Seeds will be received from ARS, Pullman after they have been accessioned into GRIN. Seed analysts will test viability using germination tests and develop methods to break seed dormancy if necessary. Seeds will be characterized using 100-seed weight measurements and other measurements as appropriate. Seeds will be dried using NLGRP standard procedures, packaged in foil-laminate bags and placed at -18C storage. Alternative storage using liquid nitrogen may be applied as needed. Stored seeds will be retested on a ~20 year storage duration.
