Research Project: Predicting Smoke Exposure in Vineyards.

Location: Horticultural Crops Production and Genetic Improvement Research Unit

Project Number: 2072-21000-057-032-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2022
End Date: Dec 31, 2025

Objective:
1. Develop a grid nesting system. 2. Downscale wind field and smoke particle concentration; 3. Use downscaled data to drive row resolving simulations of target vineyards.

Approach:
The objective is to partner with Washington State University to (1) develop a grid nesting system; (2) downscale the 3 km wind field and smoke particle concentration from NOAA forecasting products to 100 m; and (3) use this downscaled 100m data to drive row resolving simulations of target vineyards by using the Quick Environmental Simulation (QES) software system. Key products that are anticipated from this work includes options for industry stakeholders to mitigate wine grape smoke exposure through peer-reviewed publications and seminars/presentations at regional and national technical meetings.
