Research Project: Ecometabolomic Profile of Maize and Wheat with Different Management Strategies

Location: Northern Great Plains Research Laboratory

Project Number: 3064-21600-001-014-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jan 1, 2023
End Date: Dec 31, 2027

Objective:
The Objective is for ARS to learn the procedures of laboratory extractions, untargeted ecometabolomic profiling instrumentation, and data interpretation and analysis from Cooperator in order to co-evaluate the impact of agricultural management systems on the ecometabolomic function of crops (specifically maize and spring wheat).

Approach:
ARS role: During the growing season of 2022, spring wheat samples were collected from four genetic varieties grown in plots with a history of grazing and non-grazing, with each grazing regime either fertilized or unfertilized. In a separate experiment, maize (leaf and root tissue) was collected from no-till inter-cropped plots (six inter-cropped species), and reduced tillage monoculture plots. Both wheat and maize tissues will be freeze-dried and ground to prepare transport to Cooperator’s iDiv lab in Germany. Cooperator role: Teach ARS the processing and analyzing of wheat and corn tissue samples for ecometabolomic profiling. Assist ARS scientist with data interpretation and analysis.
