Research Project: Control Salmonella Serotypes and Other Pathogens in the Joints of Broiler Chickens

Location: Poultry Production and Product Safety Research

Project Number: 6022-32420-001-024-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Nov 1, 2023
End Date: Oct 31, 2024

Objective:
To control Salmonella and other bacterial pathogens in broiler chickens.

Approach:
Bacterial cultures for electron beam (eBeam) exposure will be prepared, then the bacterial samples will be exposed to eBeam technology for inactivation. The eBeam-exposed samples will then be subjected to in vitro and in vivo assays to confirm the inactivation of the eBeam-exposed pathogens and tested them for efficacy as vaccines in broiler chickens. USDA cooperator will develop vaccines against different bacterial pathogens and the university of cooperator will test the efficacy of the vaccine in broiler chickens to control Salmonella, Campylobacter, and other bacterial pathogens.
