Research Project: Food Safety Studies Related to HPAI Virus in Food Products

Location: Food and Feed Safety Research

Project Number: 3091-32420-001-013-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Feb 1, 2025
End Date: Jan 31, 2029

Objective:
The objective of this research is to provide low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) virus culture, virus testing, and viability assays to ARS researchers to determine food safety risks in dairy and meat products. To confirm low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) proxy status for highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 studies.

Approach:
This project will operate as a collaboration between the Office of National Programs (ONP), the Food and Feed Safety Research Unit, the University of Delaware, and USDA ARS' Eastern Regional Research Center (ERRC) to study influenza virus presence and viability under various meat and dairy product production conditions. BSL-3 required work including H5N1 growth, virus inoculation and detection, as well as LPAI virus production, detection and viability assays, will be carried out at UD's BSL-3 laboratory.
