Technical Abstract: The success of modern agriculture can be attributed in part to the advances in the chemical control of pests. Indeed, the ability to control weeds, and to prevent insect and microbial damage to crops by chemical means, accompanied by the use of fertilizers, has helped to drive the 'green revolution' of the past 50 years. However, public concerns over the effects of pesticides on the environment and human health have caused a dramatic change in the attitude toward synthetic pesticides. Natural products are now being considered as an alternative to the arsenal of synthetic compounds currently available. This review highlights the diversity of lichens and the potential use of their metabolites for pest management.
