Composition and phytotoxic activity of nepeta pannonica l. essential oil. Journal of Essential Oil Research. 17:704-707. Interpretive Summary: Many of the currently used synthetic pesticides are in the process of being phased out or of facing severe limitations on their use. Finding new pesticides from natural sources will not only help replace synthetic pesticides lost to regulatory processes but will help in finding more environmentally benign pesticides that might be even more apt at treating pesticide resistant pests. We have isolated components from a local plant and evaluated them for possible use against weeds, fungi and algae. We have identified 62 compounds in the fraction commonly referred to as the essential oil of the plant Nepeta pannonica We have also shown that this essential oil may be useful as herbicide (weed killer) and the compound responsibe for the activity is 7-beta,7 alpha-alpha-nepetalacton. Technical Abstract: The chemical composition of the essential oil of the aerial part of Nepeta pannonica L. from Kazakhstan was investigated by GC and GC-mass spectrometry. Sixty-two components were characterized from N. pannonica with 1,8-cineole (28.88%), and 4 alpha-alpha,7-beta,7 alpha-alpha-nepetalacton (28.31%) as the major constituents. The oil of N. pannonica was selectively phytotoxic to bentgrass compared to lettuce seeds, with 80-100% growth reduction observed at 0.1 mg/mL. |
