Effects of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium cations and anions have on dielaidoylphosphatidylcholine bilayers. Annual Biophysical Meeting. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Room-temperature ionic liquids (RT-ILs) have garnered significant interest in recent years as a non-aqueous media for biocatalytic systems because of the RT-ILs' properties of negligible vapor pressure, nonflammability, chemical and thermal stability, high ionic conductivity and excellent electrochemical stability. Their ability to be structured with convenient chemical and physical properties by a combination any of the organic cation and inorganic/organic anions make them alternatives to non-polar, hydrophobic solvents used in biocatalytic processes. However, recent work has shown that prolonged exposure to neat (Compton and Laszlo 2003) and water-saturated (DiCarlo and others (submitted)) RT-ILs resulted in lost redox activity in cytochrome c on an electrode. Our approach to get around this lost activity is to protect the cytochrome c with a lipid bilayer. A search of the literature resulted in no prior work describing the effects RT-ILs have on bilayers. Therefore this work will present the effects that cations and anions of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium RT-ILs have on a fluid bilayer. |
