Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: This manuscript describes the characteristics that make a plant invasive, and some of the existing theories of "invasions". It compares non-relational approaches (identifying characteristics that make something a weed) to relational approaches (drawing on relationships between a species and an ecosystem). It points out problems with the former approach, and suggests that the relational approach fits ecologically based invasive plant management because it offers more predictive power, and integrates into the concept of altering site characteristics to manage weed populations.
