Journal of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Analysis. 45:714-719. Interpretive Summary: Tanecetum species are aromatic perennial plants and widely spread in the northern hemisphere. Tanacetum has been used in traditional medicine. Recent studies have shown that the Tanacetum oils exhibit anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and insect repellent. Components in the oils are also of potential interest as aroma chemicals in perfumery. Chemical composition of the essential oil obtained from aerial parts of Tanacetum argenteum subsp. flabellifolium oil was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. a-Pinene (29%), (E)-sesquilavandulol (16%) and camphor (14%) were found as main constituents. Antimicrobial activity of the oil was carried out against human pathogenic microbes. Technical Abstract: Tanacetum argenteum (Lam.) Willd. subsp. flabellifolium (Boiss. & Heldr.) Grierson of Asteraceae is an endemic species in Turkey. Hydrodistillation of aerial parts using a Clevenger apparatus yielded an essential oil, which was subsequently analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy (GC/MS). a-Pinene (29%), (E)-sesquilavandulol (16%) and camphor (14%) were found as main constituents. Enantiomeric distribution of the monoterpenes a-pinene and camphor was determined on a fused silica Lipodex E capillary column using a multidimensional gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy (MD-GC/MS) system. Furthermore, antimicrobial activity of the oil was carried out using a microdilution assay against human pathogenic bacteria and the yeast Candida albicans. |
