Notice of release of Fowler germplasm green needlegrass. Native Plant Journal. 11:103-105. Interpretive Summary: Green needlegrass is found throughout the grasslands of the western prairies of Canada. While a germplasm was recently released with Manitoba origin, no such germplasm is available for Alberta, which has the greatest demand due to energy development activities. A collection expedition was conducted in conjunction with Ducks Unlimited Canada to obtain green needlegrass germplasm from the province. Selections based on seed yield and germinability led to the development of Fowler germplasm. The release of this germplasm through Ducks Unlimited Canada and its partners will provide a reliable source of seed for this high-demand species in Alberta. Technical Abstract: Fowler Germplasm is a new pre-variety germplasm release of green needlegrass developed by artificial selection from five local populations collected in southern Alberta. Selection emphasis was placed on seed yield and germinability. This plant material is expected to be used for restoration and wildlife habitat enhancement projects in Alberta and Sasakatchewan. |
