Phytopathology. 103:304-305. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: This article introduces the first Focus Issue of Phytopathology, a dedicated issue of the journal that highlights a topic of significant interest to our readership. This first Focus Issue addresses the topic of food safety and the biology of human pathogens on plants, a relatively new problem in plant microbiology with a direct impact on public health. Several research articles in this issue describe new research regarding the early events in the interaction between enteric pathogen and plants and their resident microbes. Other studies in the issue present results about internalization of enteric pathogens into various plant tissue and response to these organisms by the plant basal immune system. Finally, evidence is provided that norovirus surrogates have the ability to persist on plant surfaces. The focus issue thus presents a collection of articles that may be an important source of information to a broad range of scientists investigating produce safety. |
