Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: As considerable progress has been made on producing draft quality genomic sequence for many food animal species, the next goal for genomics research is a greater understanding of gene regulation and expression. The EU-US Animal Biotechnology Working Group (ABWG), established by the EU-US Biotechnology Task Force, has organized the AgENCODE workshop (10 January 2014). The goal of the workshop is to create a roadmap for a coordinated ENCODE-like project for food animals, with collaboration of expertise and resources in the EU and US. The morning session will include talks from key members of the human ENCODE project, followed by a roundtable discussion. The afternoon will include breakout groups focusing on species-specific issues (Ruminant, Swine, Poultry and Aquaculture) as well as on major transversal topics which are relevant to all species (Genome Expression, Epigenomics and Genome to Phenome). The final session will map out the groundwork to develop a whitepaper for pursuing a Livestock AgENCODE project.
