Interpretive Summary: Plant geneticists need different population types to conduct different sorts of genetic analyses. This paper reviews a new type of genetic mapping population called a multiparent advanced generation intercross population. This type of population has some useful properties that will help geneticists identify genes contributing to important trait variation.

Technical Abstract: A multiparent advanced generation intercross population of maize was developed to help plant geneticists identify sequence variants affecting important agricultural traits.
