Making Better Decisions: 2014 Colorado Winter Wheat Variety Performance trials. Agronomy Technical Report. 2015/1-59.

Interpretive Summary: Each year Colorado winter wheat farmers will purchase seed for planting in September. Because of differences in soils and climate from north to south in eastern Colorado, not all varieties will perform the same at each location in the state. The objective of this document is to provide a yield and performance summary for famers of several winter wheat cultivars that have been tested for multiple years at various locations from north to south in the state. Forty three cultivars are compared in 19 replicated experiments conducted in 10 different eastern Colorado counties. Specific cultivars are also compared and reported on for 6 specific trials at Haxtun (for irrigated wheat), and at Akron, Fort Collins, Julesburg, Walsh, Fort Collins (for dryland wheat), on the milling and baking quality of a select number of cultivars. Also, the document gives a detailed summary of select characteristics for several of the cultivars available for planting in this region. Finally the document has information on wheat insects and disease problems that are new to the region and makes recommendations regarding control options for pests.

Technical Abstract: Farmers need timely reports of varietal performance for making informed variety selection for their farms each year. The objective of this document is to provide a yield and performance summary of the last three years of winter wheat variety trials run at multiple locations in eastern Colorado.
