Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The Soil Moisture Active Passive Validation Experiment in 2016 Iowa (SMAPVEX16-IA) is a summer long experiment in Iowa to provide improved ground data for the calibration and validation of the Soil Moisture Active Passive Mission (SMAP). Beginning in May of 2016, temporary in situ networks were deployed and field samplers were dispatched in the South Fork Experimental Watershed to collect improved ground estimation of surface soil moisture as well as vadose zone estimates to compare to the permanent network which as been a core validation. A review of the experiment in Iowa and early results will be presented as compared to SMAP estimates.
